ASB Formal Report - August & September
- Name: Kate Villegas
- Position: ASB Executive Vice-President
- Date: October 2, 2020
- Position Assessment: Thus far in the school year I have created student shoutouts to post weekly every Wednesday on the ASB Instagram account. I contact a Ripon High Student every week asking if they could answer a few questions for me regarding school during COVID-19 and their personal lives and if they can send me a picture. I switch off between grades and keep diversity in mind so a variety of students can get exposure. I focus specifically on students who have a positive impact on others and students who are involved on campus in different ways. I have also started planning a fundraiser for October Goodie Bags for the student body with Naomi and Morty. We have finished the PO and placed the order after a couple of meetings, and we plan to sell the goodie bags for $10 and advertise them heavily. If this fundraiser is successful we will likely do Winter/Holiday goodie bags or Spring goodie bags as well. I have helped advertise for senior and school-wide events and fundraisers on social media throughout the school year too. Additionally, since the beginning of the year, I have been assisting the commissioners in their work. I created a group chat for us all where they are open to ask questions or discuss assignments. I send them reminders for when assignments are due or I send important information shared in class. I am thinking of checking in with them maybe once a month and asking them if they have any concerns or questions for the month and current leadership events as a way to improve me being their mentor. I have not overseen all the class paperwork this year, so I need to talk to Morty about if this is still relevant to my role during COVID-19. I am working on checking in with Niki more on things she needs help with for the class or things that she needs help getting done.
- Professional Development: I am very excited for the mock interviews, resume making, and cover letter making this year. I was very invested in my research for my future careers of interest, and chose Dermatology Physician Assistant. Interesting enough this is actually influencing my college application process significantly. It is helping me decide my major and minors and is helping me choose my top schools to apply to. I have loved the personal and professional development writing assignments assigned for our Portfolios or for Google Classroom more this year than any year before. By writing about myself and how my personality and interests have shaped over the span of high school, I am developing a strong idea of the professional and individual I plan to be in the future.
- Concerns/Change: I am not so much as “concerned” about this, it is just a note I have taken. Do we want Friday red/white/black spirit days to be more advertised/celebrated? I have seen students wear red on Fridays, but it is definitely not the majority. I barely see any students post on Superfan their red spiritwear, as it is mostly staff. Should we stress school color spirit day Fridays more, or is it not that significant during online school?
- Positive Comment: I would like to make a positive comment on Bella and Derek the Tech Commissioners. Bella and Derek had a high demand at the beginning of the year, having to make many videos which are very time consuming and require lots of creativity. I am so proud of the work they have done and am impressed by their diligence and success being that it is both of their first years in Leadership and being Tech Commissioners! Bella and Derek have also made backdrops for students for their Zoom Calls for an Evolve challenge given by Morty, and they look so nice. I’ve made one my Zoom profile picture!
- My Impact: Thus far this year I have collaborated a lot with my peers, more than any year before. All my classes, AP Statistics, AP Spanish, AP Government & Politics, AP Literature, and Leadership have group chats, so I take the time to share new information I know or to just discuss assignments with my peers. Leadership has always had group chats, because it is a very collaborative class, but this is new for most of my other classes. We talk on the chats everyday and help each other with what we can. I love this open communication and do my best to help others in this way for academics.
ASB Formal Report - October & November
1. Name: Kate Villegas
2. Position: ASB Executive Vice-President
3. Date: December 3, 2020
4. Position Assessment: During COVID-19 distance-learning I was still working on posting student shout outs weekly on the ASB Instagram account where I’d contact a Ripon High Student every week asking if they could answer a few questions for me regarding school during COVID-19 and their personal lives and if they can send me a picture. I focused specifically on students who have a positive impact on others and students who are involved on campus in different ways. Now that we are back on campus we are no longer having daily posts. Right now I am just continuing to be the mentor and rank and support for the commissioners.
5. Professional Development: I am excited to give my graded speech this year because I want to improve and come off as more confident and less nervous. I will have to think hard on my topic though because it may pose to be a challenge. I am also really proud of myself because I have almost finished all my college applications, and the mock interviews from Leadership helped me choose my major, Public Health, and for schools with no Public Health major, I am choosing it as a minor. I really am beginning my professional life now and it’s exciting.
6. Concerns/Change: I am concerned about students not enjoying in person school as much because of the lack of events. I’ve heard kids disappointed about not having formal, the back to school dance, and our football season. Honestly though, I think most kids are just excited to be back in the classroom able to see and interact with friends, so I am not that worried about it, also there is nothing we can do because it is dangerous to have these events in the first place.
7. Positive Comment: I would like to make a positive comment for the freshmen for being so friendly and confident in the classroom already. I’m really glad that they were so open to asking me questions about anything they were curious about just on the first day of in-person instruction. After not even having a true introduction at Core Camp, they have still eased themselves into the program and are getting to know everyone so well.
8. My Impact: I believe I am making an impact by doing my best to help others in school. The seniors and I have been very collaborative due to the circumstances so we are all working together to prepare for both tests and just for homework. We acknowledge that school will be harder learning in person than online, so we are working together to help each other finish the semester successfully.
